Mega Volume Lashes: How to Choose the Diameter, Size Your Fans and Protect Natural Lashes

Mega volume lashes use the finest extensions in bigger fans for a dark, dense lash line. See which diameter to use, how to size fans safely and which trays carry 0.03 mm.

Mega volume lashes guide for lash artists from COMELYLASH

Mega volume lashes are volume sets built from the finest extensions in bigger, denser fans, so the lash line looks dark and full. Use the finest diameter you carry. For us that's 0.03 mm. Keep the fan base narrow, keep the length sensible and only do mega on natural lashes strong enough to hold it. There's no fixed fan count per diameter. The natural lash decides.

The Short Answer

Set On each natural lash Typical diameters Look
Classic One extension 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 mm Defined, natural
Volume A small handmade fan 0.03 to 0.10 mm Soft and full
Mega volume A bigger, denser fan 0.03 mm Dark, dense, dramatic

Those diameters match the options in our free Lash Map Generator, which sets Mega Volume to 0.03 mm. If you haven't done regular volume for a while, start there. Mega is the same technique pushed further, and every weakness in your fans shows.

01

1. What Makes a Set Mega

There's no official line. Some educators put a number on it. We don't, because the same fan count weighs very different amounts at 9 mm and at 14 mm. In practice, a set is mega when the fans are clearly bigger than your normal volume fans and the lash line looks solid from a few feet away.

What doesn't change is the rule underneath it: one fan, one isolated natural lash. A dense look built by gluing fans to two lashes at once isn't mega volume. It's a set that grows out badly.

2. Diameter for Mega Volume

Go fine. A bigger fan means more fibers on one natural lash, so each fiber has to be light. 0.03 mm is our finest and it's what mega is built on. 0.05 is fine for small fans in the same set, but it isn't a mega diameter.

Finish changes the result as much as diameter. Ultra Black is our darkest, boldest fiber, which suits the dense look most mega clients want. Matte Black reads softer. Compare them on our Matte Black vs Ultra Black page, and see our 0.03 vs 0.05 vs 0.07 guide for how the three volume diameters compare.

If a mega set still looks gappy, check your isolation before you add fibers. Gaps usually come from missed lashes, not small fans.

3. Fan Size, Length and Weight

Weight comes from three things at once: how many fibers, how thick, and how long. You control all three. If a client wants mega and longer, something has to give, and it should be length. A mega fan at a moderate length lasts. The same fan 3 mm longer pulls on the natural lash with every blink.

Keep each base narrow and closed. A wide base grabs neighboring lashes, and a big blob of adhesive adds weight and stiffness for nothing. Dip only the tip of the base. The FDA classes extension adhesives as cosmetics and tells consumers to check the ingredients, and a 2019 review found allergic blepharitis was the most common complication reported with eyelash extensions (Masud et al.). Less glue near the eye is never a bad idea.

Spread the fan wide, not tall. A wide, even fan covers more of the lash line, which is where the density comes from.

4. Who Mega Volume Suits

Client Mega volume
Strong, dense natural lashes and wants a dramatic look Yes. This is who mega is for.
Fine, short or sparse natural lashes No. Do light volume with small fans and shorter lengths.
First set ever Start with volume. Go mega at a later fill once you've seen how their lashes hold.
Hooded lids Possible, with L or LC curl so the fans clear the fold.
Coming off another artist's heavy set Check the natural lashes first. Damaged lashes need a lighter set.

For curl, D and CC are the usual picks because they show off the density from the front. Our Classic vs Volume guide covers the step before mega, and the retention checklist helps when a mega set sheds early.

5. Trays for Mega Volume

All of these come in 0.03 mm. Every tray has 16 rows.

Tray Curls Lengths
Matte Black 0.03/0.05/0.07 J, B, C, CC, D 6–16 mm, Mix 8–16
Ultra Black 0.03/0.05/0.07 C, CC, D 8–20 mm, Mix 8–16
Matte Black L/M/LC L, M, LC 8–16 mm, Mix 8–16

For a dark mega set, start with Ultra Black 0.03 in D curl on a Mix 8–16 tray. You'll get every length you need for a full map from one tray.

Mega Volume Checklist

  1. Natural lashes are strong enough for the weight.
  2. 0.03 mm fibers.
  3. Narrow, closed fan bases and a small glue dip.
  4. Length kept moderate where the natural lashes are weaker.
  5. One fan per isolated natural lash.
  6. Diameter, curl and lengths saved for the fill.

FAQ

What diameter is used for mega volume lashes?

The finest you carry, usually 0.03 mm. Bigger fans put more fibers on one natural lash, so each fiber has to be as light as possible.

How many lashes are in a mega volume fan?

There's no fixed number. Fan size depends on the natural lash, the length and the look. Build the biggest fan the natural lash can carry comfortably, not the biggest you can make.

Are mega volume lashes bad for natural lashes?

Not when the fan fits the lash. Problems start when the fan is too heavy, too long or attached to more than one natural lash.
