Classic or volume? It is one of the first questions a new client asks, and one of the first decisions you make at the consultation. The answer is not about which technique is better. It is about how many extensions each natural lash carries, which diameter you pick from the tray and what the client wants to see in the mirror. This guide compares the two side by side, explains where hybrid sets fit in and shows which trays to keep at your station for each style.

The Short Answer
Classic lash extensions place one extension on one natural lash. Volume lash extensions place a handmade fan of several finer extensions on one natural lash. Classic gives a clean, mascara-like definition. Volume gives a softer, fuller and more textured look.
| Classic | Volume | |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions per natural lash | One | A handmade fan of several |
| Typical diameters | 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 mm | 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mm |
| Overall look | Defined, separated, natural | Soft, full, textured |
| Main skill | Clean isolation and placement | Fan making plus isolation and placement |
| Good starting point when | The client wants definition and length | The client wants density or has gaps to fill |
Many artists also offer a hybrid set, which mixes classic extensions and volume fans in the same set. If a client cannot decide, a hybrid lets you show both effects in one appointment.
1. What Classic Lashes Are
In a classic set, each isolated natural lash gets a single extension. The set follows the client's own lash line, so the result looks like a longer, darker and more even version of their natural lashes.
- The look: Defined and separated. Clients who like the look of mascara often like classic sets.
- Density: Limited by the number of natural lashes. A client with sparse lashes will still look sparse in a classic set, only longer and darker.
- Diameter: Thicker than volume fibers, usually 0.10 to 0.20 mm, so each extension is visible on its own.
- Where it is a good fit: First-time clients, clients who want a natural result and artists building their isolation skills.
With classic sets, the diameter does most of the visual work. Moving from 0.10 to 0.15 mm on the same length and curl is often enough to change a set from subtle to noticeably defined.
2. What Volume Lashes Are
In a volume set, the artist makes a small fan from several very fine extensions and attaches the fan to one isolated natural lash. Because the fibers are much finer than classic fibers, a fan of several extensions can be placed on a natural lash that could not carry the same number of classic extensions.
- The look: Fuller, softer and more textured. Volume can fill gaps that a classic set cannot.
- Diameter: Usually 0.03 to 0.07 mm. Finer fibers give a softer, airier fan; 0.07 mm gives a more visible fiber in light volume and hybrid work.
- Mega volume: Uses the finest fibers, such as 0.03 mm, to build very dense fans for a dramatic look.
- Skill: Fan making takes practice. Fans should have a clean, narrow base so they sit well on the natural lash.
There is no fixed fan count for each diameter. Fan size depends on the natural lash, the length you are using and the look you are building. Our 0.03 vs 0.05 vs 0.07 guide covers how each volume diameter changes the set.
3. Diameter: 0.10–0.20 vs 0.03–0.07
Diameter is the clearest difference between classic and volume trays. All COMELYLASH trays have 16 rows and use PBT fibers, in a soft Matte Black finish or a deeper Ultra Black finish.
| Tray | Diameter | Curls | Lengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matte Black 0.10/0.15/0.20 | 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 mm | C, CC, D | 6–20 mm, Mix 8–16 mm |
| Matte Black 0.03/0.05/0.07 | 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mm | J, B, C, CC, D | 6–16 mm, Mix 8–16 mm |
| Ultra Black 0.03/0.05/0.07 | 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mm | C, CC, D | 8–20 mm, Mix 8–16 mm |
- 0.10 mm: The lightest classic option, for fine natural lashes or a very soft classic look.
- 0.15 mm: A common middle choice for classic sets when the natural lashes are healthy.
- 0.20 mm: The boldest classic option. Check that the natural lashes are strong enough before you use it.
- 0.03–0.07 mm: Used for volume fans. Choose finer for softness and density, and thicker for more visible definition.
Not sure between the two finishes? Matte Black gives a soft, low-shine finish, and Ultra Black gives deeper color and stronger definition. See Matte Black vs Ultra Black.
4. Curl and Length
Curl and length work the same way in classic and volume sets: curl controls direction and lift, and length should stay in proportion to the natural lash. The main difference is how much choice you have on each tray.
- Classic: Our 0.10/0.15/0.20 trays come in C, CC and D curls, with lengths up to 20 mm for longer classic designs.
- Volume, natural direction: J and B curls give a straighter, softer direction. They are available in Matte Black J/B and Ultra Black J/B trays.
- Volume, special curls: L, M and LC curls have a straighter base with a lifted upper section. Many artists use them for hooded eyes or straight, downward-growing natural lashes. See the L/M/LC Matte Black tray and the Special Curl collection.
- Mixed-length trays: Mix 8–16 mm trays put several lengths on one tray, which is useful when you map a set with many lengths.

5. Matching the Set to the Client
The right style depends on the client's natural lashes and what they want. A few signs point one way or the other:
- The client says "natural," "like mascara" or "just a bit longer." Classic is a good place to start.
- The client has sparse lashes or visible gaps and wants a fuller lash line. Volume can add density where classic cannot.
- The natural lashes are fine or weak. Choose a light classic diameter such as 0.10 mm, or fine volume fibers in small fans, and keep the length moderate.
- The client wants a dramatic, dark look. Volume or mega volume, possibly in Ultra Black for deeper color.
- The client is unsure. A hybrid set shows both effects, and you can adjust the mix at the next fill.
Look at the natural lashes before you promise a style. Their condition, direction and density matter as much as the photo the client brings. Extensions that are too heavy or too long for the natural lash can affect how long the set lasts; our lash retention checklist explains why.
6. Stocking Your Station
You do not need every tray to offer both services. A small, well-chosen selection covers most clients:
- For classic: 0.15 mm in C or CC curl as a main tray, plus 0.10 mm for fine lashes.
- For volume: 0.05 mm as a versatile starting point, and 0.03 mm if you offer mega volume or work with fine lashes.
- For hybrid: Keep classic and volume trays in the same curl so the two types of extensions sit in the same direction.
- Lengths: Single-length trays for the lengths you use most, and a mixed-length tray for mapping.
- Tools: Isolation and volume work both depend on tweezers that close cleanly. See our tweezer guide.
When you restock, buy by curl first. Running out of your main curl in the middle of a busy week is harder to work around than running out of one length.
Classic or Volume? Consultation Checklist
- What does the client want to see: definition, fullness or something in between?
- How dense are the natural lashes, and are there gaps to fill?
- Are the natural lashes strong enough for the diameter you plan to use?
- Is the planned length in proportion to the natural lashes?
- Which curl suits the client's eye shape and lash direction?
- Matte Black or Ultra Black finish?
- Would a hybrid set be a better first step?
- Have you noted the style, diameter, curl and lengths in the client's record for the next fill?
FAQ
What is the difference between classic and volume lashes?
Classic lashes attach one extension to each natural lash. Volume lashes attach a handmade fan of several finer extensions to each natural lash, which creates a fuller look.
Which is more natural, classic or volume?
Classic usually looks closer to natural lashes because it follows the client's own lash line. A light volume set with fine fibers can also look soft and natural; the length, curl and fan size decide the final result.
What diameter is used for classic lash extensions?
Classic sets usually use 0.10 to 0.20 mm. Our Matte Black classic trays come in 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 mm.
Can I use volume lashes for a classic set?
A single 0.07 mm extension is sometimes used for a very light classic or hybrid detail, but it will look finer than a 0.15 mm classic extension. For a true classic look, use a classic diameter.
What is a hybrid lash set?
A hybrid set combines classic extensions and volume fans in the same set. It gives more fullness than classic and more definition than a full volume set.
