Doll Eye Lash Map: Lengths, Curls and How to Map It

A doll eye lash map puts the longest lengths over the pupil to round and open the eye. See example lengths for seven zones, the curls that suit it and how to map it.

Doll eye lash map guide for lash artists from COMELYLASH

A doll eye lash map puts the longest extensions over the center of the eye, right above the pupil, and steps down toward both corners. That's what makes the eye look rounder and more open. On a 12 mm peak, a typical map runs 8, 10, 11, 12, 11, 10 and 9 mm from the inner corner out, and our Lash Map Generator suggests D curl for it.

The Doll Eye Lash Map

Here's the doll eye map from our free Lash Map Generator with a 12 mm peak. Zone 4 sits over the pupil.

Zone Length What it does
1. Inner corner 8 mm Short and light. Keeps the inner corner comfortable.
2 10 mm Fast climb toward the center
3 11 mm Builds height
4. Pupil center 12 mm The peak. This is what rounds the eye.
5 11 mm Starts the drop
6 10 mm Keeps the outer third from stretching the eye
7. Outer corner 9 mm Short finish, so there's no wing

Treat the numbers as a shape. Move the whole map up or down to suit the client's natural lashes and keep the pattern: a quick rise, one peak over the pupil, a gentle fall.

1. Who a Doll Eye Suits

A doll eye makes the eye look taller and rounder. Check the eye shape with the client sitting up and looking straight ahead.

Eye shape Doll eye What to change
Almond Yes Nothing. Almond eyes suit most styles, so go with the look the client asks for.
Upturned Yes Keeping the longest lengths near the center balances the outer lift.
Downturned Usually Keep the outer corner one size shorter so the set doesn't pull the eye down.
Round Only if they want rounder A doll eye makes round eyes look rounder still. If they want length, show them a cat eye.
Hooded or monolid With the right curl Use L, LC or M so the center lengths show past the lid.

For an unsure client: "Rounder and more awake" is a doll eye. "Longer and lifted at the ends" is a cat eye.

2. How to Map a Doll Eye

Step What to do
1. Find the pupil With the client looking straight ahead, mark the highest point of the pupil on the tape. That mark is your peak zone.
2. Mark the corners Mark the inner and outer corner, then split the lash line into zones. Seven is easy to read mid-set.
3. Set the peak Pick the longest length the natural lashes over the pupil can carry, not the longest the client wants.
4. Step down both ways Drop 1 to 2 mm per zone toward each corner.
5. Map the other eye Mirror the map, then adjust for the natural lashes on that side.
6. Place guide lashes Place a few extensions at the inner corner, pupil mark and outer corner on both eyes. Sit the client up and look before you fill.

Keep the tape and the adhesive off the lid skin while you work. The FDA treats eyelash extensions and their adhesives as cosmetics and points out that the eyelids are delicate, so irritation there is particularly troublesome.

3. Curl and Diameter for a Doll Eye

D curl is the default. It lifts hard off the lash line, so the center reads tall and round. CC is softer. On hooded lids, D tips can press into the fold, so use a straight-base curl like L or LC. Our L vs LC vs M curl guide covers which one to reach for.

Diameter follows the technique, not the style. Classic doll eyes work in 0.10 or 0.15 mm. For volume, 0.05 is the easy middle, 0.03 makes softer, fuller fans and 0.07 a crisper, more defined look.

4. Doll Eye vs Cat Eye vs Open Eye

Same lengths, different peak.

Style Where the longest lengths sit Effect Suggested curl
Doll eye Over the pupil, one clear peak Rounder, more open eye D
Open eye A wider plateau across the middle Open, but softer than doll CC
Cat eye Outer corner Lifted, longer eye shape CC

Open eye is the safe middle. If you think a doll eye will look too round on someone, an open eye map gives most of the effect.

5. Where Doll Eye Sets Go Wrong

The peak lands in the wrong place. Mark the pupil with the client lying down and the mark can move, so the peak lands off center. Mark it sitting up.

The center is too heavy. The lashes over the pupil carry the longest extensions in the set, and long plus thick is how you lose them early. Our retention checklist goes through weight and fit.

The steps are too big. Jumping from 10 to 13 mm in one zone leaves a visible notch. And a long outer corner turns it into a different style, which on a downturned eye drags the corner down.

Doll Eye Lash Map Checklist

  1. Pupil marked on the tape with the client sitting up.
  2. Peak length chosen for the natural lashes over the pupil.
  3. Steps of 1 to 2 mm toward each corner.
  4. D or CC curl, or L/LC for hooded lids.
  5. Map, curl and diameter saved on the client card.

FAQ

What is a doll eye lash map?

A length plan where the longest extensions sit over the center of the eye, above the pupil, and get shorter toward both corners. It makes the eye look rounder and more open.
